June 2008 China Tour - 5th Report! June 23, 2008 - Beijing, China. The Angels visited a middle school, which was a lot of fun for everyone. They arrived during gym class and exercised and played basketball with the Chinese children. The Angels sang two songs for the children and then sang a song with them. The next stop was the Great Wall. Words to describe the wall included amazing, extremely beautiful, and astonishing! Upon arriving at the wall, the Angels bumped into a marching band from New Hampshire, and listened to them play while they stood in line to climb the wall. Their ascent up the wall was gradual at first, but became steeper and steeper. When they reached the highest point on the little stretch of the wall, they turned and headed back...all downhill from there! The next stop for the day was meeting with the Chinese dignitaries. The meeting was very interesting and was attended by a number of high officials that deal with teenagers and women. The head official gave a speech to welcome the Angels, then Charles spoke and presented the dignitaries with declarations from the Mayor of Cleveland and some Singing Angel CDs. The Angels sang two songs, and were joined by the dignitaries when they sang their song in Chinese, as it was the hometown song of the head dignitary! The dignitaries presented Charles with a few gifts of their own. After the ceremony, the group headed back to the hotel where they had a delicious duck dinner. June 2008 China Tour - 4th Report! June 22, 2008 - Beijing, China. The Angels arrived in Beijing, following a 1-1/2 hour plane ride. The group headed straight for lunch from the airport; a western-style buffet with vegetable pizza, salad, pasta with meat sauce, and french fries. The Angels then visited the beautiful Emperor's Forbidden City, with many old buildings and the magnificent Imperial Garden. After touring the Forbidden City, the Angels had an opportunity to shop in the local market where anything imaginable could be found. Ethnic foods along the street shops included deep fried grasshoppers, starfish, and sea horses! Of course there were some more familiar foods such as fruits, milk, and coconuts. After their little shopping spree, the tour group stopped for dinner McDonalds, complete with sundaes! After arriving back at the hotel, some of the Angels went swimming while some hung out in the business center for the internet access. The Angels wish to say "Good-night" to all from Beijing! June 2008 China Tour - 3rd Report! June 21, 2008 - Xian, China. The tour group visited the amazing terra cotta warriors excavation site. All were astonished with how many statutes there are and how they all were there to guard one person. The Angels learned how the warriors were broken into pieces during a rebellion shortly after the Emperor's death, and that they were forgotten for thousands of years only to be discovered by a farmer digging a well. While the tour group was leaving the terra cotta site, they happened to run into the Shaw High School band from Cleveland! The groups posed for pictures together and the Angels sang for them. The Cleveland Plain Dealer interviewed Charles and a Channel 19 crew took some video of the gathering. After the terra cotta warriors, the Angels went to the university where they met the girls choir that they would be singing with later in the day. The Angels were given a tour of the university by the girls, and had a chance to hang out with them and talk throughout the tour. The group visited a museum about the history of women in China. They learned about "feet binding" and how it came to be and how it was stopped, the secret language of the women and how they would write encoded poems to girls getting married. The museum had the different costumes that the women had to wear throughout the ages; all very beautiful. The concert with the girls choir was amazing. The audience was extremely generous with their applause, which made the show so much better. Everyone was thrilled that with the audience response and the Angels gave them the best show possible! The Angels were in the audience when the girls choir sang their segment of the show, and then joined them for the last song...Let There Be Peace on Earth. For many, this was the best day of the tour so far! Photos and report courtesy of Frank Murray. (Pictures)
June 2008 China Tour - 2nd Report! June 20, 2008 - Xian, China. The tour group had a short night of sleep to board an early flight from Shanghai to their next destination, Xian. They checked into the Howard Johnson hotel in downtown Xian late morning. The Angels had lunch at the famous De Fa Chang Jiao Zi Guan dumpling restaurant. Lunch consisted of 18 different types of dumplings, tea and sweet dumplings for desert. The official word from the Angels is that all of the dumplings were delicious! After lunch, the group went to see the "City Wall." The wall, built around the 1370s, encompasses the city and was built to protect the city from any invasion. The view from the top of the wall was breathtaking. The next stop was the Xian History Museum, where the Angels got a glimpse the city's history, the weapons they used, how their villages were built, and how the people of Xian did their every day chores. The Angels took a much needed rest at the hotel in the afternoon, prior to leaving for dinner at China’s Premier Cultural Entertainment Theatre Restaurant. The group started off with appetizers, followed with soup, beef, fried rice, vegetables, an orange surprise and finally a platter of assorted ancient imperial "Dim Sum." Dinner entertainment included some Chinese traditional music, and a cultural dance segment consisting of four different presentations. Each dance segment had specific meaning dating back to the Tang period over 1,500 years ago. The best news was that the Singing Angels had the opportunity to perform five songs on stage before the show, and the audience loved it! Photos and report courtesy of Frank Murray. (Pictures)
June 2008 China Tour - 1st Report! June 18, 2008 - Shanghai, China. This is the first photos sent back from the touring Angels! The tour group started off at 8 o'clock and went to the city for a tour of both newer and older buildings. One stop was to a museum in the older part of the city where the Angels were fascinated by the amazing treasures...everything from 2,000 year old coins to 10,000 year old pottery. Then they headed off to the top of the T.V. Tower to see some great views of the city of Shanghai. It is monsoon season in Shanghai, so the Angels put their rain gear to good use! The Angels ate at a beautiful restaurant for lunch; buffet style with all the food on a center rotating piece of glass. After their meal, they visited a place where silk embroidery was made. The silk was so intricate they looked like photographs. The Angels ate dinner at a restaurant with wonderful Chinese foods. After dinner, the tour group visited the Swagelok company, and sang for the employees of the Cleveland-based company. The Angels then had the opportunity for some local shopping in a mall. The evening was topped off with a visit to a Chinese acrobatic show. Updates from the tour will be posted as we are able. The Angels keep a busy tour schedule, and internet connectivity is also sometimes difficult to come by. Check back for further updates! Photos and report courtesy of Frank Murray. (Pictures)
